J.D. Backpack Factory

J.D. Backpack Factory is the backpack arm of J.D. Leather Goods, a bag maker founded in 2000 with its head office in Nancheng, Dongguan. It develops and produces backpacks to the buyer's own design, and it can build them in Dongguan, in Sichuan or in Cambodia, so there's a choice of plant for cost.

The group grew from leather goods. The timeline runs from ISO 9001 in 2008, through a Li & Fung audit in 2011 and a Disney audit in 2012, to a new company in Caoxian in 2018 and a Cambodian plant in 2019, which passed a SMETA ethical-trade audit the same year. The case studies go back to handbag work for Vivienne Westwood and moda SHU starting in 2015.

Each factory does something different. Dongguan is the development base: 3,000 m², 150 skilled workers, and capacity to develop about 105 styles a month. Sichuan is the big one at 30,000 m² and 1,000 workers. Cambodia has 10,000 m² and 800 workers. There's also an 1,800 m² warehouse for stocking materials. The range covers outdoor, hiking, camping, camera, laptop, travel, school, gym, hunting and military-style packs.

The process is simple. You send a tech pack, a design draft or a sample, upload files for a quote within 24 hours, then they talk through materials, lead time and price, cut the pattern and make a sample. They also handle material sourcing and inspect at each production step. Private label and wholesale exist too, but the custom route is the one that matters here.

J.D. suits a hardware brand that wants a custom carry bag, camera backpack or laptop pack built around its product, with sampling done in Dongguan and the option of producing in Cambodia.
