If you only do one community thing in Shenzhen, make it this one. SZDIY (深圳DIY) is a volunteer-run hackerspace for free software and open hardware, and it's one of the longest-running grassroots maker groups in the city.
When and where
- Every Thursday, 19:00–22:00, open to everyone
- Room 314-E, HKUST Industry, Education and Research Building, No. 9 Yuexing 1st Road, Nanshan District (as listed on its site in September 2026)
Topics are announced through its mailing list, Google Group, calendar and WeChat. Check szdiy.org before you go, in case the schedule or location has changed.
What happens
It's an open project night: people bring what they're working on (electronics, software, robots, odd experiments), work on it, help each other, and talk. It's informal, and a good place to find someone who knows the answer to your question.
Tips for first-timers
- Bring your project or laptop. It's a working night, not a lecture.
- Most conversation is in Chinese, but many members speak English; just ask.
- Say hello and explain what you're building. That's how connections start.
