Shenzhen is famous for its factories, but the thing newcomers usually need first is people: someone who's done it before, a bench to work at, and a way into the supply chain. This guide maps the maker and hardware community as it actually is in 2026. It covers what's active, what's seasonal, and what used to exist but has gone quiet.
Everything here comes from organizers' own public pages, checked in September 2026. Details change, so always confirm with the organizer before you go.
Makerspaces: somewhere to build
- TroubleMaker: an expat-founded makerspace (2016) in the middle of Huaqiangbei, the electronics market district. It has a workshop, electronics room, 3D printing, memberships, and manufacturing-readiness programs.
- Chaihuo Makerspace (柴火创客空间): Shenzhen's first makerspace, started in 2011 by Seeed Studio's founder. It's based at Vanke Design Commune in Nanshan, with workshops and hackathons several times a month.
- SZDIY (深圳DIY): a volunteer-run hackerspace with a free open night every Thursday, 19:00–22:00, in Nanshan. It's the most reliable weekly meetup we found.
Meetups
- Tech in the Tropics: a monthly tech and hardware meetup at Brasshouse bar in Futian, started by Joshua Woodard of the Shenzhen manufacturing consultancy The Sparrows. Drinks, people and short talks about what attendees are actually building.
- SZDIY Thursdays: see above.
Annual and seasonal events
- Maker Faire Shenzhen: organised by Seeed, this year on 12–13 December 2026 at Vanke Design Commune.
- muShenzhen: a month-long pop-up "maker city" by The Mu, 20 November – 18 December 2026 at OCT-LOFT North, with themed weeks (robotics, AI, biotech…).
- China Hi-Tech Fair (CHTF): the big government-hosted tech fair, 26–28 November 2026, Shenzhen World Exhibition & Convention Center.
See Events for dates and the current next meetup.
Factory tours: see the supply chain
If you're new to manufacturing, a guided tour is one of the fastest ways to meet suppliers. Several groups run them for foreign founders. See Factory tours for hardware founders.
Accelerators and incubators
The landscape has changed a lot. HAX, once the best-known hardware accelerator in Shenzhen, now runs from New Jersey. XbotPark at Songshan Lake (Dongguan) is very active in robotics. See Hardware accelerators and incubators in 2026.
What's gone quiet
Several communities that appear in older blog posts had no public activity when we checked:
- Hardware Massive Shenzhen: its Meetup groups no longer exist, and the last activity we found was from around 2021.
- AI Tinkerers Shenzhen: the chapter page lists no past or upcoming events.
- SZOIL (Shenzhen Open Innovation Lab): no confirmed activity in the last 12 months.
- x.factory: no official site found; its forum was last active in 2024.

How to plug in, fast
- Go to SZDIY on a Thursday and the monthly Tech in the Tropics night.
- Check Events for the next workshop, tour or fair.
- If you need a bench and tools for weeks or months, look at TroubleMaker or Chaihuo.
- Walk Huaqiangbei to see the component supply chain up close.
