The Sparrows is a small Shenzhen NPI and manufacturing partner: a foreign hardware team's crew on the ground in China. They take a product from prototype to mass production for startups and growing companies that can't station their own people here. That means finding and qualifying factories, DFM reviews, negotiating prices, inspecting production and writing the contracts. They don't own a factory. What they bring is being on the factory floor, in Mandarin, with an engineer's eye.
It started with a café conversation in Beijing in 2023. Joshua "Josh" Woodard and Pan, a Schwarzman Scholars classmate, kept coming back to one gap: Apple sends whole teams to run its China factories, and most small companies can't. Josh is an American mechanical engineer who grew up on Chicago's South Side, studied at MIT with a minor in Mandarin, and worked at Apple in China. His partner Sadie Cui has more than ten years in supply chain and manufacturing management. The team now includes project managers, a hardware developer and a lawyer. The name comes from 麻雀虽小,五脏俱全: the sparrow is small, but it has every organ it needs.
The case studies show the work. For Avatar Robotics, they screened 20+ Chinese humanoid-robot makers, visited the best and negotiated discounts that cut BOM (bill of materials) cost by up to 50%. "Their incredibly smart team became our command center on the ground in China," said Colin Webb. For a global NGO developing low-cost medical diagnostics, they narrowed 20+ electronics suppliers to a shortlist of 3–5, ran the client's Shenzhen visit, then handled translated supplier meetings and drafted the manufacturing contract and NDA. For Canada's Forages, they set up AQL sampling (the standard way to decide how many units to check) and audited vendors before shipment. Yetch CEO Katie Taylor says they've had a 0% defect rate since bringing The Sparrows in.
Work runs in three steps: a free consultation and risk map, a supplier shortlist from their network or yours, then daily follow-up on site with audits and QC at each stage. They charge per project or on retainer and take no factory commissions. Most clients go from first call to production-ready in four to eight months.
They suit foreign founders and SMEs making hardware in China without a local team: a first product launch, independent QC on an existing supplier, or contracts and trademarks that hold up under Chinese law. Clients also mention that Josh introduces them to Shenzhen's founder and builder network once they arrive. Josh also started Tech in the Tropics, a relaxed monthly tech and hardware meetup at Brasshouse in Futian.
