About Innozen Design
Source ↗Innozen Design is an industrial design studio in Futian, Shenzhen, that calls itself "originating from the UK and deeply rooted in China". About 30 designers and engineers take hardware from research and concept sketches through structural engineering and prototypes to a design a factory can build. Then they help clients find manufacturers in the Pearl River Delta. The portfolio is a tour of Shenzhen's gadget scene: real-time translator earbuds, underwater scooters, 360° VR cameras, robot mowers and mechanical keyboards.
Innozen started in 2012. CEO and co-founder Michael Zheng studied design strategy and innovation at Brunel University London. He worked as an industrial designer in London and at Sierra Wireless in Shenzhen, then ran a local design agency. Co-founder Tony Lee brings supply-chain contacts. Co-founder Sim Chen brings DFM (design for manufacturing) know-how in plastics and metal from work with Tencent, China Mobile, Baidu and Sany. In 2017 the core team was rebuilt around designers back from the UK, US and South Korea. In 2021 it became a national high-tech enterprise, and it's a vice-president member of the Shenzhen Industrial Design Profession Association. MIT Technology Review featured Zheng in 2018 as one of a new wave of designers helping firms move past shanzhai (copycat) products, which he called "a form of 'blindfold design'".
Projects include the WT2 real-time earphone translator, Geneinno's Titan underwater drone and Trident scooter, the Sonicam VR camera, a Durgod K230 keyboard and a Skyworth ultra-short-throw projector. Clients include LG, Denso, Tencent, Vivo, Skyworth, Lexar and China Merchants Bank, and the studio has won more than 40 design awards.
The work covers user research, industrial design, mechanical and electronics development, prototypes (3D printing, CNC and silicone molding), brand and packaging design, and supply-chain management into production. More than 60% of clients are overseas, and Innozen takes on over 100 startup projects a year, working in English by email and WhatsApp.
Innozen suits startups and brands, especially foreign ones, that have an idea or a rough prototype and want a full design team that also knows how Shenzhen factories work. It's a design studio, not a factory, so production happens at partner manufacturers.
