What is it?
Silicone parts are soft, flexible and heat-resistant, like phone-case bumpers, keypad buttons, seals and watch straps. They're made in molds, either by pressing silicone into shape with heat (compression molding) or by injecting liquid silicone (LSR). As with plastic molding, the mold costs money up front and each part is then cheap.
Design tips (DFM: designing so it's easy to make)
- 01Specify hardness (Shore A)
- 02Allow for flash lines and parting lines
- 03Ask about food-grade or medical-grade certification if needed
- 04Design draft and undercuts for demolding soft parts
