PCBWay is a name most makers and hardware engineers outside China already know. You upload Gerber files for a circuit board, pay by card, and the boards come back from their factories in Bao'an, Shenzhen, often within days. Prototype boards start at US$5 for ten. They serve more than 256,000 customers in 170+ countries and handle around 1,500 orders a day.
It started small. PCBWay began in 2014 as a five-person team with a basic prototyping website, run by CEO Yan. Headquarters are in Hangzhou; production is in Shenzhen, where the factories run three shifts a day. By 2018 they had put about US$2 million into an automated copper-plating line. Yan's motto for the business: "PCB Prototype the Easy Way."
What really makes PCBWay different is how deep they are in the maker world. You can publish your board design on their project-sharing site, and every time someone else orders it you get 10% of the PCB cost. They sponsor student teams and open-source projects, run an annual PCB design contest (one year co-hosted with Mouser), and show up at Maker Faires. The upshot is a huge community library of real projects built on their boards.
The menu goes well beyond basic boards now. There are standard, HDI, flex and rigid-flex PCBs, PCB assembly with turnkey or kitted parts, SMD stencils, 3- to 5-axis CNC machining, 3D printing (FDM, SLA, SLS, MJF and metal), sheet metal, injection molding, and a PCB layout service. Everything is ordered online, with English support by chat and email, and on-time delivery runs at 98.5%.
PCBWay suits makers, students, startups and engineering teams who want fast, cheap prototypes and small batches on a credit card, and like getting boards, enclosures and 3D prints from one account. For very high volumes, or projects that need a dedicated programme manager and factory audits, a traditional contract manufacturer is probably a better match.
